Remote Revolution

A lot of changes have happened all over the world since the pandemic, one of those changes, a significant one was the rise of remote work into popularity. Although it started with chaos, many companies and employees eventually found a way to get their way around it. This initial chaos has sparked several discussions about remote work, including its merits and demerits from both the employer's and employee's perspectives. It has also led to some interesting developments in this arena. As we all know, heard, or experienced all the good and bad of it in one way or another and still discussing it largely, this blog will give you a good idea of the recent developments in this field

Fully Remote to Hybrid Work Models

The Shifting Landscape from Remote Work to In-Office Collaboration

Remote work has several benefits for both employees and employers. It provides great autonomy over work, savings on time and money spent on travel, and more time for personal life for employees. For employers, it can result in savings on overhead costs, business continuity, access to global talent, etc. However, remote work also presents some challenges such as a lack of belonging and social life, no work-life balance, difficulty assessing the skills of candidates, and managing staff productivity.

(Busch, Nash, and Bell, 2011)

According to a survey conducted by salary.com (2021), only 5% of employers are planning to continue the fully remote approach while a majority of the employees surveyed wanted to work from home fully or mostly. With the pandemic at the rear, considering the challenges and benefits of remote work, many are adopting a hybrid approach that combines remote and in-office work. This approach seems to be the perfect solution for both employers and employees, as it allows them to address their respective concerns. It looks like hybrid is the future of work for many industries.

Virtual Interviews

Since the pandemic, virtual interviews have become increasingly popular. Both companies and candidates prefer them because they allow companies to complete the hiring process quicker than before and the employee, saving time and money spent on travel. Even though things are falling back to normal many companies still rely fully on online interviews or made it a part of their selection process.

One of the major changes or developments in this process is the set of skills that recruiters now look for in their potential remote workers. Self-efficacy, technological skills, and strong communication skills are some of the virtual competencies that recruiters are emphasizing.

(Busch, Nash, and Bell, 2011)

As of March 2024, there are almost 300 virtual interview platforms on Capterra. The growing number of video interview platforms shows the increasing demand for online interviews with many employers listing virtual interviews in job ads.

Tracking productivity

In the past, tracking the productivity of online workers was a challenging task. However, with recent technological advancements, it has become much easier for supervisors and managers to monitor the activities of their team members. This technology generates a comprehensive report on a daily basis which includes internet usage, communication, productivity, location tracking, and screen capturing.

After the boom of these technologies, these types of apps and softwares are commonly known as “Bossware”. Some examples of bossware are Desktime, Teramind, and Activetrak. Whether employees like it or not, this sure has made remote management a lot easier.

Focus on Mental Health:

Employee well-being has been a topic of discussion for several decades, but the pandemic, lockdowns, and the increase in remote work have brought it to the forefront. As more people talk about it, there is a growing awareness of the importance of employee well-being. This has led to a change in the perception of what matters to people when considering their employment. While good remuneration and company name were once the most important factors, work culture, work-life balance, and workplace environment have now been added to the list.

This trend has caused employers to rethink their approach and place greater importance on employee well-being and mental health. To tackle remote work challenges such as loneliness, lack of social connections, sense of belonging, etc. organisations have incorporated several strategies.

Some of these strategies include creating online platforms to facilitate discussions, providing a virtual buddy, training programs to develop skills, consistent check-ins with teams, and engaging social programs.

(Edureka, 2023) and

(Josh Howarth, 2024)

To conclude, we have seen many obstacles and developments in remote work since the pandemic. Although companies and researchers have developed many ways to address the challenges faced by remote workers, we need to find a way to improve the employee-manager relationship in a virtual environment as it is in a physical environment.

  2. The survey was done in 2021 when COVID19 was significantly still prevalent, and even then only 5% of employers supported and wanted to continue on with the hybrid set up? Dinesh, those statistics are discouraging and doesn't seem like most companies like moving towards hybrid or fully remote work environments? I was reading Forbes the other day(https://www.forbes.com/sites/jackkelly/2021/08/17/the-real-reasons-why-companies-dont-want-you-to-work-remotely/?sh=6c542ddd7fb3) and Forbes states that "managers reported that nearly 70% of the remote workers are more easily replaceable than onsite workers." Also that "67% of supervisors said they spend more time supervising remote workers than onsite workers". Great article though Dinesh, it is very relevant to the time today. However it does create a debate about the remote work revolution, and you have concluded diplomatically saying that employee-manager relationship in a virtual environment needs improvement and that there are "challenges".

    1. Thanks for your feedback Anji. It’s a good argument. I used the survey conducted by salary.com (2021) to highlight that employers should use a Hybrid approach rather than a fully remote work model. Also, I read the article you shared from Forbes. The SHRM survey highlights concerns about remote work, it's important to note that perceptions can change with better management practices. supervisors may find it challenging to manage remote workers due to communication and oversight issues, modern technological advancements like Bossware, Desktime, Teramind, and Activetrak can help monitor and capture employee work effectively in remote settings. By embracing these tools, employers can improve trust and productivity in their remote work environments. It's important to note that the article was published 2 years ago, and since then, there have been significant improvements in technology that make it easier to manage remote workers. So, don't let concerns about Remote/Hybrid work hold you back - with the right tools and management practices, it can be a great way to work!

    2. Thanks Dinesh for shedding light on the topic with your reply. True, with ongoing technological advancements, remote work/the Hybrid model is becoming a preferred working environment by many employees. The question is if more and more employers would shift towards it though? I know for the IT industry, remote or hybrid work is almost a norm, but some industries are still struggling with the concept. But yes, hopefully with technological advancements, this may well be the new norm of the future. Though I am more worried about the blur in the work time lines and family time. It takes a lot of discipline to manage WFH or working in a hybrid model.

  6. This article analyses the growth of remote work and the impotant changes it has created. The article highlights the advantages of hybrid models and virtual interviews, while also acknowledging the formation of "bossware" to track the employee activity. Trust is a key element of an effective relationship between employer and the employee. The possible risk of relying on technology to extremely control remote employees may have a negative impact on productivity.

One possible successful approach is to develop and build trust with remote employees. This can include clear communication, establishing clear expectations, and conducting frequent periodic evaluations. By placing trust in employees to successfully manage their time, organisations may cultivate a remote work environment that is characterised by enhanced positivity and productivity.

That's why clear communication, transparent expectations, and regular evaluations are so important for establishing trust.
While using technology like "bossware" can be helpful in measuring productivity, it's essential to find a balance to avoid over-monitoring that might negatively impact employee morale and productivity. Trusting employees to manage their time effectively can lead to a happier and more efficient remote work culture.
